Off-campus research

There are many opportunities outside of Beloit for environmental and sustainability research, including the National Science Foundation’s Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). Pathways to Science is one of many databases where students can find substantial summer research opportunities.

Boundary Waters Wilderness Field Station

For almost 70 years, Beloit College faculty and students have conducted field research at the Boundary Waters Wilderness Field Station, where they learn about environmental issues facing this unique natural resource. While canoeing and camping in the Boundary Waters, professors introduce students to wilderness education as well.

Global Experience Seminars

The Landscapes in Transition program includes field courses focused on issues of sustainability in Asia. The next course offering, Cultural and Natural Heritage and Sustaining Communities in Japan, will take place in Kyushu prefecture in the summer of 2025. Landscapes in Transition is one of Beloit’s Global Experience Seminars, which are short, summer, study-away opportunities led by Beloit College faculty.

Summer Internship and Graduate School Brown Bag

Interested in applying for a summer internship or graduate school, but not sure where to start? This annual event brings together students and faculty from across the School of Environment & Sustainability with Career Works staff to talk about available opportunities, the application process, the do’s and don’ts of developing a resume and cover letter, and how to request letters of recommendation.

H.H. Woodard Lecture Series

The annual series brings a prominent public figure in the environmental sciences to campus to speak on the most pressing geology and environmental issues.

Annual Geology ‘Skip’ Trip

The Geology Department’s annual beginning-of-the-semester field trip is open to all students on campus and is generously funded by Richard “Skip” (’59) and Mary Ann Davis.

Outdoor Recreation Grant

The goal of the Beloit College Outdoor Recreation Grant (BCORG) is to provide funding, staffing, and any other assistance needed for groups or individuals who would like to spend more of their time outdoors or engage in recreational activities. BCORG is student-run and committed to equity in outdoor recreation.
